Duplex Seminar

The Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association (Sassda) will be hosting a Duplex Stainless Steel Seminar in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg on the 17th, 19th and 20th February 2014, respectively.

Duplex stainless steels are currently the fastest-growing group of stainless steels. This is because of their attractive combination of mechanical properties with corrosion resistance ranging from 304 equivalence to super austenitic equivalence, depending on the grade.

The seminar will be directed at fabricators, end users and project/consulting engineering companies in the mining, petrochemical, pulp and paper, agricultural, chemical, energy and food and beverage industries. In addition to providing pertinent information regarding duplex stainless steels, the objective of the seminar will also be to showcase the expertise and capability of the South African manufacturing industry to potential specifiers and users of duplex stainless steels.

To support the increased adoption and growth of duplex stainless steels within African markets, Sassda will be holding a seminar with the following provisional programme, which includes six international speakers:

  • Sassda will present on the history, development and properties of duplex stainless steels.
  • Outokumpu, a group of stainless steel-producing companies headquartered in Finland, will offer technical and theoretical insight into the different grades of duplex stainless steel.
  • South Africa’s Steloy Castings will facilitate a discussion on the manufacturing of cast components in duplex stainless steels, including which components should be cast, an explanation of the alloy designations, and some of the challenges of casting duplex stainless steel.
  • UK-based Metrode Products will present on welding and the weld properties of duplex and super-duplex stainless steels.
  • England’s Welding Alloys Group will discuss cored wires for duplex stainless steels and trends in the stainless steel FCAW (flux-cored arc welding) market as well as assess the requirements of the oil & gas industries.
  • The South African producer Columbus Stainless will offer insight into performance testing and the suitability of lean duplex stainless steel for use in solar hot water systems.
  • A second presentation from Finland’s Outokumpu will cover duplex grades in tank manufacturing, discuss life cycle costing for material selection, and demonstrate a tank calculation tool.
  • SA-based Styria will consider the benefits of designing with duplex stainless steels.
  • Another South African firm, the Durban-based Metso ND, will present the important facts and figures associated with fabricating in duplex stainless steels.
  • Johannesburg-based Multi Alloys will elaborate on duplex stainless steels from a supplier’s perspective, including corrosion resistance in sulphuric acid applications, mechanical properties for rotating equipment and piping, aspects of fabrication including machining and stress relieving, as well as product availability, specifically of fasteners and valves.
  • Key international guest Outokumpu will deliver a third presentation on duplex grades for use in the mining industry, focusing on leaching processes and a corrosion-resistance diagram that allows selection of speciality stainless steel grades for these environments.
  • South Africa’s NDE Stainless Steel will focus on duplex stainless steels as the world’s first engineering-grade stainless steels and cover interesting and cost-effective new applications.
  • Aperam South America will discuss the use of duplex grades for oil and gas exploration in Brazil and highlight a number of possibilities for the use of duplex stainless steels in markets such as the pulp and paper industry.
