Designing Structural Stainless Steel

Two webinars given by specialists Catherine Houska and Nancy Baddoo. In the first part the history, performance, sustainability and applications for stainless steel as a structural material will be introduced, with references to specific projects. The second webinar will explain why stainless steel needs its own design rules and how its unique properties impact both design and fabrication.

Part 1: The history, performance, sustainability and applications for stainless steel as a structural material will be introduced, with references to specific projects. The families of stainless steel used for structural sections and available product forms will be reviewed. The mechanical and physical properties will be compared with other metals. Guidance on material selection for a range of environments (atmospheric, salt water, soil, swimming pools, industrial) and design factors that influence durability will be presented. The appropriate ASTM specifications and AWS codes will be reviewed.

Part 2: This webinar will explain why stainless steel needs its own design rules and how its unique properties impact both design and fabrication. The scope of the design rules given in the Design Guide will be explained, followed by an explanation of how the design rules were derived. The design rules will be presented, starting with design requirements, and moving on to tension members, members in compression, members in flexure and shear and members subject to combined forces. Aspects of designing bolted and welded connections will also be covered. Design rules for structural fire resistance will be described. The rules will be put into context by comparing them with the existing rules in AISC 360-10 for carbon steel.

Part 1 is presented by Catherine Houska, TMR Stainless, Pittsburgh, PA.
Part 2 is presented by Nancy Baddoo, Ph.D., Steel Construction Institute, U.K.

This presentation was developed as part of AISC's Live Webinar series. Upon completion of the seminar, the attendee will be able to purchase an online quiz based on information given in the seminar. When she/he passes the quiz with a score of 70% or higher, the attendee will be able to print a CEU/PDH certificate for 3.0 contact hours.

A design guide on structural stainless steel is also available from the AISC website. It provides guidance for the design of structural stainless steel. It is written for engineers experienced in the design of carbon steel structural components but not necessarily in the design of stainless steel structures, and is aligned with the design provisions in the 2010 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings. The design guide can be obtained here
