SASSDA reports high demand for worldclass stainless steel training

The Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association (sassda) has reported that the demand for training has more than doubled in the last year.

“A knowledgeable, informed and educated industry will help to drive stainless steel growth as people become more comfortable in specifying, using and working with stainless steel,” says John Tarboton, Sassda’s Executive Director. He adds that Sassda’s primary aim for all courses is to educate, upskill and increase the knowledge of people in the stainless steel industry. Its training initiatives cover various target groups ranging from architects to workshop employees, sales staff to manager, and engineers to university students.

To date this year has been an exciting one for education and training at sassda with numerous training initiatives being launched: its course offering has been increased and others have been updated.

Two new courses have been launched - the “Stainless Steel in Architecture” breakfast workshops which are being presented in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria and half-day “Handling and Fabrication of Stainless Steel” courses targeting workshop employees, with several members opting to run this in-house. The advanced stainless steel course is currently being reviewed and is expected to be rolled out in the first quarter of 2016.

Over 250 people in the industry have registered for sassda courses this year. In addition over 400 students at various universities have been upskilled with stainless steel knowledge as sassda strives to ensure that stainless steel remains an important part of the universities’ curriculum. Some students have elected to participate in the student competition by incorporating stainless steel as part of their 4th year projects.

“Gratifyingly, some of our courses have been shared with other stainless steel development associations (SSDAs) around the world, which are adapting the courses to suit their environment and languages, but it’s testament to the world-class quality of our training offering,” says Tarboton.
