Major revision to stainless steel structural standard allows confident use of nickel-containing stainless steel

Published 06 June 2023

ASCE/SEI 8-22 Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Members was released in May 2023. The revised standard will allow structural engineers to confidently use cold formed components of nickel-containing stainless steel in their structures. It complements AISC 370 which deals with hot formed members. Nickel Institute consultants Nancy Baddoo and Catherine Houska were heavily involved in its production. It is dated 2022, as that was when the text was finalised. The previous edition was from 2002 and was badly in need of updating. It has also been adopted into the International Building Code.
