Nickel Magazine – Critical Nickel: providing sustainable solutions

Published 01 October 2021

Often, a little nickel goes a long way in emissions reduction technologies, helping provide sustainable solutions to get us to "net zero". Despite needing energy to produce, nickel is one of the minerals that plays a critical enabling role in the energy transition required to reduce CO2 emissions.

Its unique properties facilitate the successful deployment of the spectrum of clean energy technologies such as geothermal, batteries for EVs and energy storage, hydrogen, wind, concentrating solar power and nuclear. And as nickel-enabled greener energy becomes more available, the carbon footprint of nickel production is also being reduced.

In this edition of Nickel we take a close look at exactly where nickel is and its critical role in four of the technologies which will be part of the mix of solutions for decarbonisation.
